Theory

The Business Process Modeling Notation (BPMN) is a simple way to notate graphically the steps in a business process. It depicts the end to end flow of a business process. The notation has been specifically designed to coordinate the sequence of processes and the messages that flow between different process participants in a related set of activities. It is 

A standard Business Process Model and Notation (BPMN) will provide businesses with the capability of understanding their internal business procedures in a graphical notation and will give organizations the ability to communicate these procedures in a standard manner. Furthermore, the graphical notation will facilitate the understanding of the performance collaborations and business transactions between the organizations. This will ensure that businesses will understand themselves and participants in their business and will enable organizations to adjust to new internal and B2B business circumstances quickly.

The BPMN models the following data regarding business processes

  • What triggers a process and what is the produced result?
  • Which are the necessary steps (in terms of tasks, subprocesses)?
  • Which dependencies exist between activities (sequence flow)?
  • Which alternatives (XOR gateways) are there and where can activities can happen in parallel (AND gateways)?
  • Who is responsible for carrying out an activity (pools, lanes)?
  • Which information (data objects) are relevant within a process?
  • Where are interaction points (message flow) with suppliers and customers or with other processes?

BPMN 2.0

The vision of the BPMN 2.0 version is to have one single specification for a new Business Process Model and Notation that defines the notation, metamodel and interchange format. The features include

 

  • Aligning BPMN with the business process definition meta model BPDM to form a single consistent language.
  • Enabling the exchange of business process models and their diagram layouts among process modeling tools to preserve semantic integrity.
  • Expand BPMN to allow model orchestrations and choreographies as stand-alone or integrated models.
  • Support the display and interchange of different perspectives on a model that allow a user to focus on specific concerns.
  • Serialize BPMN and provide XML schemes for model transformation and to extend BPMN towards business modeling and executive decision support.

 

The BPMN 2.0 provide three diagram types

 

  • Process or collaboration diagram
  • Choreography diagram
  • Conversation diagram

The main BPMN 2.0 futures lead us to the development of a Business Process Management System (BPMS) called DIPDS as shown in the figure bellow.
